STORM Imogen brought her destructive power to the region on Monday, smashing the North Devon coast.

With the shipping forecast warning of extreme gale force 11 winds and the sea state predicted to be “phenomenal”, for most it was a case of battening down the hatches.

But for experienced surfers, Imogen offered a chance to explore the most-sheltered and fickle spots.

We are not talking daredevil thrill seekers, putting their lives at risk in a raging sea, but seasoned locals and some of the UK’s top pros in search of hidden wrapping-point breaks and mysto slabs untroubled by the fierce wind.

A hardy bunch gathered at one spot from first light and those who made it out scored some of the most leg-burning waves you will find.

The waves were not as clean as you would want but, with runners linking all the way through and sizes to impress, it was one of those sessions that will live long in the memory.classic winter point break
